CARE PACKAGE 11 🤲🏽 You Don’t Need Strategies, You Need This One Paradigm Shift
You don’t need strategies if you keep this one thing in mind:
Organizing is nothing more than choice-making. Forget all the specifics, organizing is simply the act or process of making choices.
Why does this matter and why is it linked up with your personal wellness and development? Because making choices fortifies your agency, shapes your identity, and clarifies your direction… which are the three most relevant and impactful motions to move you out of feeling scattered, confused, cluttered, sluggish, demotivated, worried, and/or misaligned.
When amidst a mess we often become paralyzed by potentialities “I would use that, I could wear this, this might be good for that” and stuck in inactivity because of a fear of making the wrong choice “but what if I need it later, I don’t want to be without” (or some other insecure/negative potential).
This is inertia in the same way that depression is. There is discord between what’s happening in the mind and what’s happening in the physical reality. An overworking (turning your wheels) in the mind space, but an immobility/inertia/inactivity in the tangible environment.
This is why we see a correlation between our mental wellness and the state of our homes or other spaces. It’s not just a movie trope that the person who falls into a depression after some traumatic event is also living amidst a physical and tangible mess. These two spaces (mind and home) reflect and affect one another. They move together and either limit each other’s progress or contribute to each other’s momentum, like the legs of any bipedal traveler. Your legs move in the same direction and that’s how you get from point A to point B. If one stops or starts going in the opposite direction, progress might be halted all together.
So back to inertia in your choice-making. If you are in that moment where you feel like you’re in a mess, you feel confused, you don’t know where to begin, etc. (Btw I talk about all of this because I’ve been there!), think about this: the specific choices you make don’t actually matter as much as the fact that you are making choices and continuing to make choices.
Choice creates movement. If you are in inertia, prioritize movement and momentum to get out of there.
As written in my book “you’re working with the stuff but it’s really not about the stuff. It’s about you and your willingness to make choices about your life. The specific choice you make is not as important as the fact that you make a choice and are repeatedly, confidently making choices. The act itself will reinforce action-taking as part of your character, which will affect who you are, who you become, and what you’re capable of doing in your life.”
Choice is the actual life-changing magic of organizing. It’s not the bins, it’s not having less, it’s not “creating space”, it’s not color coordination, it’s not really any of that. It’s You making choices about your life via the space and things in your immediate surrounding.
This matters and is impactful because choice is all we actually have in life. And the way we choose is a reflection of how we’re identifying in any moment. When you choose differently you effectively change who you’re showing up as, which is the most powerful lever behind everything in your life. Identity.
To have different, we do different. To do different, we actually have to show up differently (on an identity level). You know what’s a perfect reliable and honest reflection of how we’re showing up? Yea, our choices.
And when does this start happening?
Well we tend to have this idea that the important choices are somewhere out in the future and that things will change for us eventually. But what if those important choices weren’t out somewhere in the future? What if they were right in front of us? What if you could immediately shift things for yourself by simply choosing differently now?
The important choices are the choices we’re making today and things don’t change for us until we change.
Take, for example, your thoughts about self-investing (getting the guidance you need or want). If you’ve halted your growth in some area because you have resistance… let me just ask you, where else in your life are you holding back and choosing in this way?
If that resistance is any of the following- too busy, don’t have the money, don’t have the time, can’t because xyz… where else are you waiting for conditions to be comfortable before you choose differently?
In my experience, it’s not the conditions or the circumstances (what you have or don’t have)… it’s simply choice. What will I choose. How will I choose. With what energy am I making this choice. What are the underlying belief structures of this choice. And do I want to continue perpetuating those belief structures or do I want to create and choose from new, more spacious, more empowering belief structures?
Will you choose from fear, lack, and scarcity… effectively continuing the cycle for yourself? Or will you choose from possibility, growth, will, excitement, self-trust, resourcefulness, and responsibility?
I know the real magic of organizing and it’s exactly why I don’t just talk about organizing. As you are beginning to discover, it’s far deeper, far more impactful, far more meaningful, far more important, and goes way beyond color coordination and a cute undie fold.
Have an amazing, beautiful, prosperous, joyful, expansive, energizing, rejuvenating, and clarifying day!
Dismantling the structures that are holding you back,
Loretta
